MAIN CAMPUS, 19 May 2024 - USM Mathematics Society successfully organised a Rubik’s Cube tournament, themed ‘USM Penang Cube 2024’ at Dewan Utama Desasiswa (DUD) on 19 May 2024 from 7.30 am to 8.30 pm.

This tournament partnered with the World Cube Association (WCA) and Malaysia Cube Association (MYCA). There were around 150 participants from various countries participated in this competition.

The project director, Ainin Sofea Adnan, emphasised that the objective of this tournament was to enhance participants’ confidence in solving the cube while also developing perseverance and problem-solving abilities. It offered a platform for showcasing skills and creating a community dedicated to speedcubing, promoting greater engagement with the puzzle.

“This tournament gives players a chance to shine on an international stage and gain exposure and recognition. They can make friends and exchange cultures with other players from different backgrounds. Participating in such events can also promote cultural interaction, personal development, and a better understanding of the world of gaming,” Ainin said.

A USM Penang Cube 2024 competitor, Tsong Jian Feng, said he joined this tournament to set personal records and enhance his cubing skills. In addition, it provided valuable opportunities to engage with new and old friends, which helped create a sense of friendship within the cubing community.

“For over eight years now, I have been working on improving my ability to solve cubes. Learning how fast I can solve each problem has been thrilling. What inspired me to start was the most excitement of the challenge and the thrill of mastering something as hard as solving the Rubik’s Cube,” he said.

“After participating in several competitions, I have developed a strong passion for helping the community grow by assisting new cubers as they take their first steps into the game. I aim to make the experience enjoyable and engaging, fostering a supportive environment for newcomers,” Tsong said.

Another USM Penang Cube 2024 competitor, Sri Ganesh Krishna, mentioned that cubing was a stress-free activity. He emphasised the importance of relaxing for hobby enjoyment. This approach allowed him to overcome tiny obstacles, making cubing enjoyable easily.

“Embrace cubing as a personal challenge, not a competition against others. Don’t fear being slower than some – it’s about personal growth. Dive into competitions without worrying about speed. There's much to learn and enjoy from fellow competitors,” he added.
